Teaching:
My goal as an educator is to equip students with the critical thinking skills, knowledge and tools need to engage with and question the world around them. To support this goal, I am committed to creating an engaged, inclusive and collaborative learning experience with students.
At the University of Birmingham I contribute to teaching in the BA/BSc, and MSci programmes. Currently I (co)teach:
1st Year: Global Environmental Challenges
2nd Year: Social Geography; Berlin Field Course; Methods
3rdYear: Urban Environments in the Global South
Msci / 4th Year: Geopolitics and Globalisation
Supervision:
I welcome inquiries from potential PhD and MRes students who are interested in doing research on urban environments and development geographies. Proposals on topics connected to the (everyday) politics and/or governance of urban environments in the Global South, particularly in South Asia and Zambia/Southern Africa are particularly welcome. However, research sites in other contexts can be considered The urban environment can be considered quite broadly and may include urban environmental policy, environmental imaginaries, urban water (research on non-piped water is particularly welcome), waste and discards, urban greens spaces or environmental infrastructures. Urban politics and governance may be approached through an (urban) political ecology lens, or through engagement with ideas on the everyday state, everyday governance, environmental justice or other frameworks.
UK and EU applicants may enter the competition for ESRC &/or AHRC scholarships at the University of Birmingham, depending on the specific research topic. A separate application is required for the funding competitions. Deadlines for these are are normally in January (AHRC) and February (ESRC), and applicants interested in applying for funding should contact their proposed supervisor and apply for PhD study at Birmingham well ahead of these deadlines.
International candidates may source funding through other competitions (ie: Commonwealth scholarship, African Development Bank etc). You are encouraged to approach a potential supervisor at least 3 months in advance of any funding deadline.
If we agree that there is potential to work together I am happy to comment on funding proposals.
